George Martin Elected to the Board of Directors of the French & Pickering Conservation Trust

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson managing attorney George E. Martin was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the French & Pickering Conservation Trust, the largest land convservation organization in Chester County. The Trust is focused on protecting rural and historic resources within the watersheds of the French & Pickering Creeks.

Mr. Martin serves on the Planning Commission of West Vincent Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of EarthJustice, a non-profit, public interest law firm dedicated to protecting natural resources and wildlife of the earth and defending the right of all people to have a healthy environment.

Alfred J. Carlson Elected Co-Chair of Philadelphia Bar Association Workers' Compensation Section

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson partner Alfred J. Carlson has been elected Co-Chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association's Workers' Compensation Section. The Association's Workers' Compensation Section was established in 1995 to address the specialized needs of lawyers practicing workers' compensation law. Section members helped shape recently enacted workers' compensation law by reviewing and commenting on various legislative proposals that emerged prior to the final passage of the statute.

Mr. Carlson has been a litigator of Pennsylvania workers' compensation cases since 1992. For the first seven years of his practice, he worked at a leading defense firm representing major corporations, insurance companies, and state and local government agencies in Pennsylvania workers' compensation matters. In 2000, he joined Martin Banks to represent injured workers. In addition to an extensive caseload, Mr. Carlson is a frequent lecturer on workers' compensation matters and has authored numerous articles on the subject. Mr. Carlson has served as the legislative liaison for the Philadelphia Bar Association's Workers' Compensation Section prior to his election as Co-Chair. He is a member of the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations as well as the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association. He received his law degree from Widener University School of Law in 1992 and is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania.

David F. Stern Named Partner

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson is pleased to announce the appointment of David F. Stern as a partner of the firm. David has been with the firm since 2004 and focuses his practice solely on the representation of injured workers in workers' compensation matters. Prior to joining the firm, he worked on the defense side of workers' compensation at one of the leading defense firms in Philadelphia, representing insurance carriers and employers.

Mr. Stern has published several articles on workers' compensation in the Legal Intelligencer and is a frequent speaker at seminars in this area of law. He is a member of the Philadelphia and Pennsylvania Bar Associations and Trial Lawyers Associations. In 2006, Mr. Stern was recognized by the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania by being enrolled in their Pro Bono Roll of Honor. Mr. Stern was appointed to the Membership and Amicus Curiae Committees of the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association. He is an active volunteer in the Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program (VIP), where he handles a variety of cases for underprivileged individuals on a pro bono basis.

John P. Dogum Serves as Faculty for Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association Seminar

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson attorney John P. Dogum served as faculty for the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association program entitled "Liens & Subrogation." The program, held on November 30, 2007, taught attendees how to resolve claims with federal benefits, private health insurance, public assistance, welfare, and workers' compensation liens.

A partner with the firm, Mr. Dogum has limited his practice to Pennsylvania Workers' Compensation since 1992. Originally a partner at a major Philadelphia defense firm representing Fortune 500 companies and major insurance carriers in workers' compensation litigation, Mr. Dogum joined Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson in 2002 to protect the rights of injured workers.

Mr. Dogum earned his law degree from Widener University School of Law in 1992 and is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania.

Dogum served as faculty with several pre-eminent doctors and leading attorneys in the field for a Continuing Legal Education Seminar entitled "The 4 Common Injuries and Mental Stress Claims in Pennsylvania Workers' Compensation." The program covered issues in workers' compensation including carpal tunnel syndrome, back injuries, knee and rotator cuff injuries, how to handle mental stress claims, malingering, and how to make informed decisions regarding medico-legal ethics issues.

George Martin Serves as Faculty for PaTLA's Annual Update for Civil Litigators

George Martin, Managing Partner of Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson, served as faculty for the Annual Update for Civil Litigators hosted by the Pennsylvania Trial Lawyers Association (PaTLA). George E. Martin Elected President-Elect of American Association of Justice's Workers' Compensation Section

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson Managing Partner George E. Martin was recently elected President-Elect for the American Association of Justice's (AAJ) Workers' Compensation Section. Formerly the American Trial Lawyers Association, the AAJ's Workers' Compensation Section provide a means for members to unite with others practicing in similar areas of the law. Each Section encompasses an area of litigation practice that is broader than those addressed by litigation groups.

Melissa R. Chandy Joins Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson has expanded its workers’ compensation practice with the addition of Melissa R. Chandy as an Associate. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Chandy served as a law clerk for the Office of General Counsel - Department of Labor and Industry -Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board. In her position, she was responsible for drafting opinions of appealed cases for consideration and issuance by the Workers’ Compensation Appeal Board Commissioners.

In 2006, Ms. Chandy earned her law degree from Dickinson School of Law at Pennsylvania State University, where she was a member of the Minority Law Students Association and the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. She was also a member of Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. She received her bachelor of commerce degree in 2003 from the University of Toronto. Ms. Chandy is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Women in the Profession Committee and Minority Bar Committee. She is also an active member of the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Association and the Philadelphia Bar Association.

The Workers' Compensation Law Section of PaTLA was established to address the needs of members that represent claimants in workers' compensation matters. They focus on the development and understanding of the law relating to workers' compensation law and how it affects claimants.

George Martin, Managing Partner of Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson served as faculty and Halmon Banks, served on the Advisory Panel for the 23rd Annual Pennsylvania Bar Assocation's Workers' Compensation Fall Section Meeting. Each year, workers' compensation attorneys and judges gather in Hershey, Pennsylvania for the Fall Section Meeting. The event offers the opportunity to explore the hottest issues in depth as well as to exchange ideas and experiences informally with colleagues from across the state. Mr. Martin served as faculty for the Recent Developments in Workers' Compensation Law program.

Amit J. Shah Joins Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson has expanded its workers' compensation practice with the addition of Amit J. Shah as an Associate. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Shah was an associate with a boutique defense firm, handling workers' compensation defense litigation in Pennsylvania. He brings more than three years of experience in workers' compensation to his position. Mr. Shah joins the firm to work exclusively on protecting the rights of injured workers in Pennsylvania.

In 2004, Mr. Shah earned his law degree from Dickinson School of Law of the Pennsylvania State University. During law school, he was a member of the Minority Law Student Association and served as a law clerk in a local solo practitioner's office. He received his bachelor of arts degree in administration of justice in 2001 from The Pennsylvania State University. Mr. Shah is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Workers' Compensation Division.

Samuel H. Pond Elected to Board of Trustees of Philadelphia Bar Foundation

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson attorney Samuel H. Pond has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation. The Philadelphia Bar Foundation was founded in 1964 for the purpose of promoting access to justice for all people in the Philadelphia community, particularly those struggling with poverty, abuse, and discrimination.

Attorney Jerry Lehocky Served as Faculty for Pennsylvania Chamber of Business & Industry Seminar

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson attorney Jerry M. Lehocky served as faculty for the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business & Industry program entitled "Workers' Compensation Roundtable: Reducing the Costs - How New Litigation Changes Benefit Employers and Claimants." Mr. Lehocky discussed the new changes to the Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act that were signed into law in November 2006, which included resolution hearing procedures, mandatory mediation and trial schedules, and a cap on attorneys’ fees.

Mr. Lehocky was instrumental in drafting the legislation’s actual language, meeting and negotiating with other interested groups, testifying before the Pennsylvania House Labor and Relations Committee and working with the Legislature to create the positive changes. This new law is the first “pro-worker” legislation enacted in over 30 years!

Attorney Alfred Carlson Participates in PESI Seminar

Martin, Banks, Pond, Lehocky & Wilson attorney Alfred J. Carlson participated in the PESI's 20th Annual Workers' Compensation Law Seminar. Mr. Carlson discussed an overview of the 2006 amendments to the Pennsylvania Workers' Compensation Act including mandatory mediation, new hearing scheduling procedures, changes affecting the appeals board process, and strategies for practitioners litigating and settling cases. The seminar took place on April 20, 2007.
